Sustainability

Our approach

Sustainability is an integral part of our business. Our strategic direction is underpinned by sustainability, which is reflected in our purpose, business strategy, and customer promise, and is at the heart of our vision of financially sound and sustainable society.

In other words, we consider how our financial decisions affect the environment and society, and we actively seek to direct money into projects and companies that are focused on doing a long-term good for the people and the planet.

Our journey

Being the bank for the many comes with a great opportunity and responsibility to drive the green transition. We believe that everyone can contribute to positive changes in the society by mitigating climate change and pursuing other relevant goals, and we are determined to support it.

From the bank’s perspective, sustainability is driven by our direct and indirect impact and by social contribution.

  • Our direct impact – the sustainability basics through our own operations. It means that keeping our business in order is a prerequisite.
  • Our indirect impact – our impact on and contribution to society through our customers. This is in fact our superpower.

Sustainability in our operations

In terms of our daily operations some of our top priorities are greenhouse gas emissions and our employees. Our targets are:

  • Reduction of our operational carbon footprint by 60% by 2030, compared to 2019 (scope 1, 2 and 3).
  • Employees who have a suitable work-life balance, ability to handle issues at work, and have opportunities to work in a supportive, respectful and inclusive environment.
  • Sickness ratio below 2.8% (this ratio at Swedbank in Lithuania has been lower than 2 per cent for many years now).
  • Zero tolerance towards harassment, victimization, and discrimination.
  • Higher overall diversity within Swedbank.
  • 40/60 gender balance in management positions.
  • Gender-equal salaries for equal jobs (Swedbank in Lithuania closed this gap in 2023 and is committed to maintain it).
  • Closing the gender pay gap (the difference between the average income of men and women in the bank).

Our impact through our customers

We can scale the impact through our customers, as their emissions are by far the largest part of our total carbon footprint. Thus, Swedbank Group has set decarbonisation targets of its lending portfolio for year 2030. Targets for the Baltic Banking, including Swedbank Lithuania, are:

  1. Mortgages: reduce mortgage-related emission intensity (kgCO2e/m2) by 48%.
  2. Commercial real estate: reduce loan-related emission intensity (kgCO2e/m2) by 45%.
  3. Power generation: reduce project-related emission intensity (tCO2e/MWh) by 59%.

Swedbank Group is also part of the Net-Zero Banking Alliance and is committed to reach zero net carbon emissions by 2050.

To support green transition, Swedbank Lithuania has diversified financial solutions which include:

  • Green mortgages, solar panel loans, energy efficiency loans for private customers.
  • Green loans for corporate customers, e.g. generation of renewable energy, construction of energy efficient buildings and renovation of multi-apartment buildings. During 2024 a significant milestone was reached – the total green loan portfolio of Swedbank in Lithuania exceeded one billion euro.
  • Sustainability-linked loans for corporate customers.
  • Pension funds, which prioritize businesses that create a better environment and a higher quality of life for all, and fund with high sustainability ratings.
  • Green, Social and Sustainability bonds. By issuing the bonds, Swedbank Group raises funds to finance environmental and social projects, such as generation of renewable energy, projects promoting access to healthcare and education and other.

Additionally, we try to help our customers understand the necessity of the green transition and how they can do their part, by providing different tools and material, for example:

  • Self-assessment tool for major material ESG risks,
  • Overview of material sustainability aspects for different sectors,
  • Sustainable home guide for private customers.
